For example, in some sewage pipelines, the acid and alkali concentration of the sewage is not very high, so we can use EPDM acid and alkali resistant rubber joints in this case. However, if we use this type of acid and alkali resistant rubber joint in chemical pipelines, it will probably corrode and fail in a short time.
Therefore, the acid and alkali concentration must be considered when using acid and alkali resistant rubber joints. So, having said all that, what acid and alkali concentrations can these joints withstand? Acid and alkali concentrations are expressed by pH value, also known as the hydrogen ion concentration index, which is a scale of hydrogen ion activity in a solution, and is the standard for measuring the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. This concept is… normally, pH is a number between 0 and 14. When pH < 7, the solution is acidic; when pH > 7, the solution is alkaline; and when pH = 7, the solution is neutral. Therefore, we can conclude that EPDM acid and alkali resistant rubber joints can be used for extended periods when the acid or alkali concentration is neutral.
However, what about acid and alkali solutions with a pH greater than 7? In such cases, while EPDM acid and alkali resistant rubber joints cannot be used, we can consider using fluororubber, silicone rubber, or PTFE-lined rubber joints. These are better and safer than EPDM acid and alkali resistant rubber joints in pipelines with high acid and alkali concentrations.
